Ability to Communicate
Manchester looks for applicants who can express ideas clearly, coherently and through reasoned discussion.
UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER · MEDICINE INTERVIEW PREPARATION
Prepare for your Manchester Medicine interview with confidence.
Manchester's Medicine interviews are designed to explore the person behind the application — how you communicate, what motivates you to become a doctor and what you have learned from your experiences.
Our Manchester-focused preparation offers structured discussion, realistic interview practice and constructive feedback to help you express your ideas naturally.
Manchester currently describes a five-station Multiple Mini Interview, with eight minutes at each station and a two-minute gap between stations.
Applicants can attend online via Zoom or in person on campus, subject to availability. The university states that both formats are assessed in the same way.
In the currently published format, each station has a separate interviewer. Your starting station is allocated randomly, with no advance station information and no reading or writing component.
Interview dates and times are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Manchester usually holds interviews between December and early March.

Manchester explains that academic potential has already been considered before applicants are invited to interview. The interview therefore takes a broader view of the applicant, particularly the values and behaviours expected of future medical students.
Manchester looks for applicants who can express ideas clearly, coherently and through reasoned discussion.
The university wants specific evidence of experiences that have influenced the applicant's decision to study medicine.
Manchester values reflection on caring experiences, including what applicants felt and learned. These experiences do not have to come from traditional clinical settings.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate an informed layperson's understanding of contemporary medical issues rather than detailed clinical knowledge.
Manchester may explore ethical questions to understand whether applicants can identify and explain the issues involved. The university does not expect one prescribed viewpoint.
These are examples of possible assessment areas, not a station-by-station topic mapping. Read Manchester's published assessment areas.
Our preparation is organised around the assessment areas Manchester publishes, with an additional focus on practising the conversational interview format.
Practise expressing ideas coherently, listening carefully and responding thoughtfully to follow-up questions.
Reflect on the experiences that influenced your decision to pursue medicine and learn to discuss them without relying on memorised scripts.
Explore what you learned from caring, volunteering, employment or other relevant experiences, including how those situations affected your understanding.
Develop the ability to discuss current topics in medicine from an informed, non-specialist perspective.
Practise identifying competing considerations, explaining different perspectives and presenting reasoned arguments without assuming every issue has one correct answer.
Become more comfortable with timed conversations, unfamiliar questions and constructive feedback, using Manchester's published format as the starting point.
These six cards describe MediBrain UK learning outcomes, not official stations. Manchester currently publishes a five-station MMI, subject to the possible 2026/27 change.
Manchester explicitly encourages applicants to speak naturally and warns against over-rehearsed answers. The university wants to understand your experiences, ideas and ability to communicate — not hear a memorised monologue.
Take time to understand the question and consider which experience or idea is most relevant.
Move beyond listing activities. Discuss what happened, how you responded and what the experience taught you.
Listen to the interviewer, respond to follow-up questions and allow your reasoning to develop naturally.

Starting with a list
“I volunteered at a community lunch, served food and helped clear the tables.”
Exploring one lesson
“One guest seemed reluctant to join the conversation. I learned to leave pauses and let them decide what to share. It made me think about how easily helping can become taking over.”
Use your own experiences and words. This is not an official Manchester question or a model answer to memorise.
